The event will be held on Wednesday, October 12 at 7 p.m. at the Sackville Public Library. As well as celebrating the library’s "coming of age," the Board will launch a new "Adopt-a-Book" program. The Honourable Herménégilde Chiasson, Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick, Mount Allison alumnus and honorary degree holder, will be the guest of honour. In addition, Krista Johansen, author of Quests and Kingdoms: A Grownup’s Guide to Children’s Fantasy Literature, Mount Allison student Kate Timmers, and faculty members Deborah Wills and Robert Lapp, of the Department of English at Mount Allison University will offer brief readings from thematically appropriate works. There will also be the traditional birthday cake. Although the building itself is now 21 years old, its collection is somewhat older, as many books predate the building. These were previously housed in the Sackville Town Hall. However, the growth of the collection over the years now strains the capacity of the building. A recent study prepared by the regional director of the New Brunswick Public Library Service, Claude Potvin, concluded Sackville’s library is inadequate to meet the needs of the community, and recommended the construction of a substantially larger building that would allow for an expanded collection and provide a wider range of services. For now, the Library Board is pleased that the collection has "come of age" and would like to celebrate the library’s past and future. —30— For more information please contact Karen Bamford, tel: 364-2550 (kbamford@mta.ca) |
