Source: McMaster University http://dailynews.mcmaster.ca/story.cfm?id=4306 McMaster employees get in shape during Healthy Workplace WeekOctober 26, 2006 McMaster employees are healthier thanks to the efforts of the Healthy Workplace Group, which organized this week's Healthy Workplace Week events. The week began with a Health Check event, which invited McMaster employees to visit several stations in CIBC Hall, where they could have their blood pressure, bone density and lung capacity measured, among other health indicators. Fourth-year kinesiology students Vicki James and Laura Ciarallo demonstrated exercises that can be performed using a TheraBand. The giant rubber band can be used in a variety of ways to stretch and strengthen muscles. It's also lightweight and compact, making it easy to use by people who spend long periods of time sitting at their desks. "Any exercise has positive benefits on cardiovascular disease," said James. "Even the smallest thing is better than nothing." McMaster employee Gioia Buckley had her lung capacity tested at the Health Check event. "I think it's great that McMaster is doing this," she said of Healthy Workplace Week. "Healthy employees are more productive employees." Healthy Workplace Week concludes tomorrow with the following events: Pick-up Basketball # Time: noon to 1 p.m. # Location: Burridge Gym, IWC Design Basics 101 # Time: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. # Location: MDCL 3022
