Award-winning photographer Linda Troeller's TB-AIDS Diary photo exhibit will make its Canadian premiere starting Monday, Oct. 30, at Ryerson University's School of Image Arts, Third Floor Gallery (IMA 310), 122 Bond St. Media are invited to a preview Oct. 30 from 9:30 to noon. The free exhibit runs from Monday, Oct. 30 to Friday, Nov. 17. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Consisting of nineteen 20" x 24" photomontages and text, Troeller tells the story of her mother's experience as a victim of tuberculosis in the 1930s and juxtaposes that journey to a young male's experience as a 1980s AIDS sufferer. The installation has been showcased around the world and has been translated into14 languages. Professor Jean Mason, Department of Professional Communication, and Professor Don Snyder, chair of the School of Image Arts, will provide introductory remarks at the media preview at 10 a.m. Mason became acquainted with Troeller through her research into illness narratives created by tuberculosis patients who were patients in northern New York sanatoria before effective drug therapies were available. Troeller's mother was one of the patients whose narratives Mason is studying. An article detailing the experiences of TB patients like Troeller's mother will be published in a book currently in press. A high-profile artist, photographer and social activist, Troeller's photojournalistic work has been exhibited worldwide and has been published in numerous books and magazines. In 1999, she lectured at Ryerson as part of the annual Kodak Lecture Series. She also teaches and lectures in the U.S. and abroad. Troeller will also give a lecture on her exhibit on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m., School of Image Arts, Room IMA307, 122 Bond St. Mason will give opening remarks and Snyder will end the lecture with closing remarks. Medical professionals, academics, AIDS activists and artists will also be part of a discussion panel, Realities and Representations of TB and AIDS, on Thursday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m., School of Image Arts, Room IMA307, 122 Bond St. Note: Troeller will be available for phone interviews prior to and in the morning of Oct. 30.
