The walk is in conjunction with GuluWalk Day, an international civil movement. People will be walking in 30 cities all over the world on October 22. North Bay participants will begin the walk at Nipissing University, in parking lot #2. Their walk will take them on a winding tour of the downtown, finishing at the North Bay and Area museum. The war in northern Uganda has been ravaging its people for nearly 20 years and has gone largely unnoticed by the mainstream media and the general public. Over 20,000 children have been abducted by the rebel-led army to be used as soldiers and sex slaves, over 90 per cent of Acholi people have been displaced in camps that offer neither security nor basic provisions. Every night, as many as 40,000 children, some as young as five, walk for hours from their villages into major urban centres so that they can sleep in relative safety. In the morning, they retrace their steps in hope of returning in time to attend school and do their daily chores. This is their daily routine because to stay home is to risk abduction by the rebel army and be forced to fight as child soldiers in northern Uganda’s 19-year civil war. The GuluWalk is meant to recreate the journey these children undertake each night. Anyone interested in participating should meet organizers at the beginning of the walk at Nipissing University in parking lot #2. Route: Starting from Nipissing University Parking Lot #2 at 5:00 p.m./ Monastery Rd. to trail / McKeown Ave. to Algonquin Ave. / Algonquin to Main St. / Main west to Memorial Dr. / Memorial east to Main St. / Main west to Ferguson St. / south on Ferguson to North Bay and Area Museum
