October 20, 2005 Source: University of Toronto: http://www.news.utoronto.ca/bin6/051020-1733.asp Flag flies at half-mast for South Asian earthquake memorial Oct 20/05 (updated Oct 21) Victims of the recent devastating earthquake in South Asia will be honoured Oct. 21 on the St. George campus with a memorial service and a candlelight vigil sponsored by a number of student organizations and U of T’s anti-racism and cultural diversity office. Faculty, staff and students are invited to the hour-long memorial service, which takes place at noon at the Great Hall, Hart House. The event will include short talks, special services, a moment of silence and a tabla musical performance by Professor James Kippin, Faculty of Music. Speakers will include Raza Siddiqui, co-president of the U of T Pakistan Students' Federation; graduate student Safiyyah Ally, communications director, U of T Muslim Students' Association; Professor David Farrar, vice-provost (Students) and deputy provost; Nouman Ashraf, anti-racism and cultural diversity officer; and Professor Chelva Kanaganayakam, director of the South Asian studies program. The candlelight vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the lawn of the Students’ Administrative Council building. The University of Toronto flag at Simcoe Hall will be flown at half-mast on Oct. 21 in memory of the earthquake victims.
