Want to acknowledge the great work your colleagues or friends are doing? Then say, "I noticed," by nominating them for a Victoria’s Leadership Award. Victoria’s Leadership Awards were established in 2004 through a partnership between Leadership Victoria, the Rotary Club of Victoria - Harbourside, and the University of Victoria. The awards recognize and honour people who contribute to the community and inspire and mentor others to become involved and participate in the life of our city and surrounding community. Joining the partnership this year is Vancity and their Vancity Youth Leadership Award, which is designed to acknowledge emerging youth leadership. UVic professor Dr. Marge Reitsma-Street, a recipient of the 2005 University of Victoria Community Leadership Award states: "Victoria’s Leadership Awards are unique as they speak not to an individual’s work but to how positive change can occur when individuals and groups of people work together in different ways to achieve a common goal." Other Victoria’s Leadership Award honourees from 2005 were Dr. Nigel Livingston, a UVic biologist and founding director of the University of Victoria Assistive Technology Team, a group of more than 300 UVic faculty, staff and students who give their time and expertise to develop and test new devices for people with disabilities; Barbara Smith, past director of Prostitutes Empowerment Education and Resource Society (PEERS); Bob Beckett, Langford Fire Chief and initiator of many international educational projects; and Mel Cooper, one of Victoria’s most honoured citizens. The awards have four categories: The Rotary Community Leadership Awards recognize community leaders who meet the Rotary test for the highest level of ethical behaviour and community leadership. The University of Victoria Community Leadership Awards acknowledge exemplary leadership in linking the University of Victoria and the community for greater public benefit. The Vancity Youth Leadership Award acknowledges an emerging leader within our community. The Leadership Victoria Lifetime Achievement Award honours outstanding long-term service in community leadership roles such as philanthropy, innovation, mentoring and career achievement. These awards will be presented at the second annual Victoria’s Leadership Awards Fundraising Luncheon on Tuesday, January 24, 2006, at the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort.
