On Oct. 12, the faculty held its annual awards ceremony, celebrating both its students and faculty. UNBF computer science students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements and diverse extra-curricular activities. Undergraduate students received recognition for scholarships and awards totaling $117,900, and graduate students earned an additional $190,800 in prizes. The 2005 OAO Technology Solutions Scholarship, in the amount of $4,000, was awarded to David Hirtle of Moncton, N.B. Mr. Hirtle impressed the selection committee with both his academic record and his active involvement in the community. Nicole Richard and Charline Poirier from OAO Technology Solutions, Inc., presented Mr. Hirtle with his award. Each of the four finalists for this award were top students entering the final year of the bachelor of computer science program. The 2005 Faculty of Computer Science Excellence in Teaching Award nominees were also recognized at the ceremony. This year’s award went to Natalie Webber, senior instructor in the faculty. The other nominees, each selected by their students, were Mike Fleming, Will Hyslop, Ken Kent, Joanna Lumsden, Andrew McAllister, and Rick Wightman. Steven Burns, executive project manager for Bullet Proof Solutions, Inc., delivered the keynote address. Mr. Burns is a UNBF computer science graduate. He shared memories of his days as a student and spoke of his experiences as an information technology professional and entrepreneur.
