SACKVILLE, NB — Dr. Bill Godfrey, head of the history department at Mount Allison University, is kick-starting his retirement, all the way to Asia. The holder of the Stiles-Bennett Chair in History has been selected for the position of Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU), Mount Allison’s partner university in Japan. The position is for 11 months and is a capstone to a distinguished teaching career at Mount Allison for Dr. Godfrey. He first joined the history department in 1970, serving twice as the department head for a total of eight years. He served as Dean of Arts from 1985 to 1992. Godfrey also held the position of director of research administration for three years and has sat on two Presidential search committees, showing his good judgment of character. In all of these roles, Dr. Godfrey is a popular professor, always making time for his students. Specializing in Atlantic Canadian history, Dr. Godfrey is currently teaching several classes, including a seminar and is supervising three honours thesis students. In Japan, he will continue to be called upon for his expertise in Canadian history, delivering lectures in English and being a resource person for both students and faculty alike at Kwansei. He says, "Of course, given Mount Allison’s established partnership with KGU, through the MASSIE exchange program (Mount Allison Sophomore Semester in English), there’s also a small recruitment role being played in this position to encourage Japanese students to apply for this exchange and spend some time at Mount A." Mount Allison Dean of Arts Carrie MacMillan says of her colleague, "This is a much-deserved honour that recognizes Dr. Godfrey’s distinguished scholarly career as an historian and as a Canadianist. Dr. Godfrey is an ideal choice to enhance Canadian Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University." Throughout his career, Dr. Godfrey has produced many publications, most recently the book, The Struggle to Serve — A History of the Moncton Hospital, 1895-1953 (McGill-Queen’s University Press). He has also held several prestigious fellowships, including appointments at Cambridge University and the University of Maine. Dr. Godfrey holds a BA and MA from Waterloo and received his PhD at Queen’s University. He came to Mount Allison on the advice of a professor at Queen’s, Dr. George Rawlyk, who had previously taught here. —30— For further information please contact Dr. Bill Godfrey, Mount Allison University, tel: 364-2318 (wgodfrey@mta.ca).
