Prestigious Academic Achievement for Trent Professor

(Peterborough) Dr. David Sheinin, a Trent University history professor, is the first ever Canadian to be voted an Académico Correspondiente (Corresponding Academic) of the Academia Nacional de la Historia de la República Argentina or the National Academy of History of the Argentine Republic. Membership in the Academia represents the highest honour for a historian of Argentina.

"I'm elated – it's a great honour," said Prof. Sheinin, who teaches Latin American and United States histories at Trent. "I hope that I'll be able to participate in the activities of the academy and find more ways to work with students and faculty members in Argentina."

Founded in 1893, the mandate and activities of the Academia are similar to those of the European academies of arts and letters. The Academia is located a block from the presidential palace in the Buenos Aires buildings that housed the offices and chamber of deputies of the National Congress between 1864 and 1905.

Among its many activities are the promotion and study of history, the sponsorship of annual conferences on the regional histories of Argentina, the publication of refereed serials and monographs, and the awarding of prizes for excellence in history to university and secondary school students.

Prof. Sheinin has published five books and many articles. His latest books are Argentina and the United States: An Alliance Contained (University of Georgia Press, 2006) and Fringe Imperialism: The United Church and Canada's Ties with Latin America 1965-1990 (Canadian Scholars' Press, 2006).

His most recent article is "'La actividad nuclear repercute en el mundo': Nuclear Development and the Shaping of an Independent Argentine Foreign Policy, 1950-1990," Estudios Interdiciplinarios de América Latina y el Caribe Vol. 16, No. 2 (December 2005).
