On the morning of Monday October 17, in conjunction with the UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty, students will wrap the trees at the campus’ front entrance in white streamers at 8:00 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m. they will be demonstrating their support with Make Poverty History placards. On Wednesday October 19, students will form a human chain in the student centre and display a poster outlining the details of the Make Poverty History campaign. Students will also be selling white, Make Poverty History, bracelets. The events are sponsored by Nipissing University’s World University Service of Canada (WUSC) local committee. WUSC is a network of individuals and postsecondary institutions who believe that all peoples are entitled to the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to a more equitable world. Their mission is to foster human development and global understanding through education and training. "Our goal with these events is pretty straightforward, to advocate for the Make Poverty History campaign and to educate people about the campaign," said Oweeny De Silva, Nipissing University student and event organizer. "As someone who was born and raised in Sri Lanka, I have seen devastating poverty first-hand and I believe Canada can and will make a difference. It is vitally important that we reach my fellow university students on this issue. We are the future leaders and we need to recognize our power and responsibility." "It is wonderful to see our local WUSC committee organizing an event of this nature," said university president Dr. Dennis Mock. "It demonstrates that our students are thinking globally as champions for positive change in the world. That is a key element of great leaders, and those are the type of students we want to graduate from Nipissing University."
