When: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Where: The Lower Deck - 3rd Floor Tap Room Historic Properties, 1869 Upper Water St. Halifax, Nova Scotia Background: Reference books on popular music have existed for some time. However, without exception, they have been intended for the trade, rather than academic market, and have concentrated on biography and anglo-american popular music to the exclusion of subject-based entries and the popular music of the rest of the world. During the 1980s, there was a strong feeling among the international body of popular music scholars that a reference work on popular music was needed that: -Was intended for the academic market -Would map the field of popular music studies and give it shape and coherence -Would be based as much on subject as biographical entries -Would cover the world’s popular music No model existed for such an encyclopedia. This presentation describes how The Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World was developed in response to the needs of the international community of popular music scholars, and how this development has unfolded to the present day, when seven out of its 23 intended volumes have been published. -30- For more information: Mark Savenkoff Coordinator, Branches and Affiliates Alumni Services Carleton University (613) 520-2600, ext. 4099 Mark_Savenkoff@carleton.ca
