Event OTTAWA, October 13, 2005 — On Saturday, October 15, all engineering schools and faculties in Ontario will launch the "Go Eng Girl!" program, an interactive event for girls in Grades 7 to 10 and their parents. The University of Ottawa Faculty of Engineering, considered the most women friendly engineering school, will play a major role in the event. Guest speaker Marie Lemay, CEO of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, will discuss research that has been conducted by female engineers, and the contributions these women have made to the engineering world. A number of students, businesses and organizations will also attend the event to discuss their experiences in the field, which should help participants and their parents better understand the basics of the engineering profession. In addition, two interactive exercises that deal with emerging fields (i.e. environmental and biomedical engineering) will give the future students a chance to test their skills. The event will also be a chance to showcase the new undergraduate biomedical mechanical engineering program. The program, which received final approval from the ministry in August 2005, will be the first of its kind in Ontario. Its goal is to graduate engineers who are proficient in designing medical devices such as artificial hearts, implants and prostheses, robotics for medical applications, biomechanics, and rehabilitation engineering. The official start of the program will be September 2006. What: Go Eng Girl! When: Saturday, October 15, 2005, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Where: SITE, Level 0 (800 King Edward Avenue) For more information, please contact Joanne Benoit at (613) 562-5800 ext. 6096 or (613) 864-5801, or send an e-mail to: jbenoit@genie.uOttawa.ca.
