International Education Week Fair to highlight international opportunities available for students at Memorial

Are you interested in travelling? Studying overseas? Getting international experience? Then take advantage of this exciting opportunity to learn about international programs and study/work abroad programs for Memorial students. The International Education Week Fair takes place on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.on the third floor, University Centre, St. John’scampus.

The fair will provide information on academic and non-academic international opportunities for current and prospective students, as well as graduates. This includes academic courses offered overseas through the Departments of French and Spanish, German and Russian, Political Science, as well as international work terms, exchanges, internships and volunteer opportunities. Representatives from the various faculties, schools and departments on campus who offer international opportunities will be on hand to provide information and advice.

"Each year, the Faculty of Arts challenges its students to broaden their horizons in a literal as well as in a figurative sense by participating in study abroad and international programs," said Peter Ayres, associate dean (undergraduate), Faculty of Arts. "Whilst different programs focus on different fields of study, from language acquisition to history, geography, politics and literary heritage, all contribute to the student’s personal and intellectual development by offering them the opportunity to experience other cultures and languages in a direct, personal and very real way."

Lynn Hartery, senior career development co-ordinator and former Young Professionals International (YPI) participant, has nothing but positive comments to share on her experience working overseas.

"My experience travelling and working in Thailand was amazing! I learned so much about cross-cultural communication and diversity. Experiences like these can really change your perspective on the world and your place in it. I would recommend an international experience to anyone, especially students and graduates who are looking for an exciting way to get work experience."

Stephen Hewitt, another YPI participant, from St. Shotts, Newfoundland, worked in Cambodiahelping with the finances of the Centre for Social Development. Speaking about his time there he said, "It was an incredible six months — both extremely difficult and extremely rewarding. Already I had so many rich experiences, even in the first few weeks — memories and learnings that will last me a lifetime. I feel very lucky to have had a chance to live and work there."

Students from Memorial have travelled all over the world working, studying and volunteering. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from fellow students who have participated in these programs. Other agencies and additional information related to travelling abroad will also be on display.

This event is a collaboration of various faculties, units and centres on campus including Student Affairs and Services, the Faculty of Arts, Centre for International Business Studies, Youth Employment Strategy/Young Professionals International and Student Guard.
