Nov 8/06 by Karen Kelly (about) (email) This year, over 800 people will be released from jail and immediately wind up homeless in Toronto. More people are going from jail to shelter and back again - a cycle that will be explored in a public forum at the University of Toronto on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave. The free public forum, Homelessness and the Criminal Justice System, will also examine such questions as what types of offences are committed by and against the homeless, whether policing and jails are the answer to homelessness and destitution and how the regulation of public space affects the treatment of homeless individuals. The second half of the forum will focus on a pilot program to interrupt the cycle of homelessness and incarceration. The event is presented by the John Howard Society of Toronto and U of T's Centre for Urban and Community Studies. Copies of the research report Homelessness, Crime, Victimization, and the Criminal Justice System will be available.
