Four University of Ottawa researchers chosen for newly created Ontario Early Researcher Award program

OTTAWA, November 25, 2005 — Four researchers at the University of Ottawa are among the first laureates of the Ontario Early Researcher Award program, formerly the Premier's Research Excellence Awards. The awards, worth approximately $100,000 each, are part of the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund, created in 1998 to support research and development initiatives at universities and other research organizations in Ontario, and to encourage public-private partnerships in research.

Here are uOttawa’s laureates:

Dr. Azzedine Boukerche, School of Information Technology and Engineering

Dr. A. Boukerche is a Canada Research Chair who hopes to develop interactive simulation-based technology for distributed collaborative virtual environments. A long-term goal of his research is to develop novel techniques and well founded mechanisms of designing efficient, scalable and meaningful large-scale distributed interactive simulation systems.

Dr. Rees Kassen, Department of Biology

Dr. Rees Kassen’s work on the experimental study of biodiversity has led to a rethinking of mechanisms responsible for patterns of diversity in nature. His research seeks to answer why there are so many species on the planet by following evolution in real time using microbial populations. He hopes to give a general explanation for patterns of diversity across scales, from genes to ecosystems.

Dr. Daniel Gervais, Faculty of Common Law

Dr. Daniel Gervais is the Oslers Professor of Technology law at the University of Ottawa specializing in intellectual property law. His research looks into the legal and economic criticisms of copyright norms. He is interested in how the Internet affects copyright and how copyright, in turn, affects intellectual property.

Dr. Marc Rodger, Faculty of Medicine

Dr. Marc Rodger is a hematologist/epidemiologist whose thrombophilia research focuses on discovering novel disease associations and therapeutic interventions for people suffering from thrombophilia, a tendency to develop blood clots. Over 1 in 6 people are affected by the disease. There has been a recent explosion in knowledge about thrombophilia, but many questions remain unanswered. His research aims to gain new knowledge of this disease and ultimately prevent illness, disability, death in people with thrombophilia.

The Ontario government is investing $30 million over three years as a part of this program. In this round of awards, $6.4 million will support 64 researchers working at 13 universities in 10 communities across the province.
