November 24, 2005 Source: St. Mary's University: http://www.smu.ca/newsreleases/2005/11-24-2005.html What's all the FASS about? Droves of people poured into the Saint Mary’s Art Gallery this afternoon for the launch of the Faculty, Alumni, Student and Staff (FASS) Art Exhibition. Robin Metcalfe, Director/Curator of the Art Gallery, provided the opening remarks at today’s special event. Dr. Elizabeth Chard, who is the University’s new Protocol Officer, also spoke at today’s launch. Both Dr. Chard and Metcalfe underscored the fact that this year’s show has a special meaning attached to it, as local watercolour artist Laurie Mireau is dedicating her works at the annual show this year to her long-time dear friend, Dr. Cyril Byrne. Dr. Byrne, who is now Professor Emeritus, has been instrumental in the growth of the Irish Studies Department at the University. His hard work and dedication to the institution over the last 35 years at Saint Mary’s has earned him a tremendous amount of praise among students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the University. Simply put, his tireless efforts to the students, academics, research and community outreach will never be forgotten. Dr. Byrne attended today’s special event. Mireau’s "Scenes of Saint Mary's," now on display in the side wing of the Art Gallery, highlights the grounds of the Saint Mary’s campus. She also has other paintings (watercolour, acrylic, and oil) on display at the annual show that runs from November 24 to December 14, 2005. A portion of every original Mireau-Art painting sold will go directly to the Canadian Cancer Society (Brain Cancer Research). A tax-deductible receipt for $50 (from the Cancer Society) will be issued to each person who purchases one of her paintings. Mireau’s paintings make a thoughtful graduation gift for students, or retirement gifts for staff and faculty. As well, they make the perfect gift for anybody at anytime of the year. For those wanting to purchase a painting or to find out more information, please contact Laurie Mireau at (902) 429-7078. For those who would like to preview her work online, please visit: www.mireauart.com. All those who attended this afternoon’s event took the time to preview the abundance of art created by faculty, alumni, staff and students.
