Trimming Yankee Sails: Pirates and Privateers of New Brunswick by historian Faye Kert, will be launched this month by the New Brunswick Military Heritage Program (NBMH) and Goose Lane Editions of Fredericton. Ms. Kert’s work is volume six in an NBMH series. The NBMH Program is part of the department of history’s military and strategic studies program. Although the word pirate conjures up Hollywood images, Trimming Yankee Sails paints a very different picture. The story covers pirate history from Saint John to Cape Breton Island and Halifax, to the east coast of the United States, down to the Virginias. The book offers a glimpse of northeastern North America’s naval history and the pirates and privateers who scourged the Atlantic coast throughout the 19th century. Ms. Kert’s exposure of the murky context in which these semi-legal marauders operated reveals surprising truths about Confederation and its promoters. Ms. Kert is the author of Prize and Prejudice: Privateering, and Naval Prize in Atlantic Canada in the War of 1812. She will make three promotional stops beginning Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic at 1675 Lower Water St. in Halifax. Her New Brunswick appearances include Wednesday, Nov. 30, at noon at the New Brunswick Museum in Market Square in Saint John. That same evening, Ms. Kert will be at Westminster Books at 445 King St. in Fredericton at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Lee Ellen Pottie at 506-260-1428 or Andréa Levesque at 506-450-4251. - 30 -
