Norm Choate Distinguished Graduate Award, presented annually to an exemplary graduate of St. Jerome's University. Kmiecic will also deliver the Graduates' Association Lecture, speaking on the topic of "The Greater Good: Enacting Personal Values to Build Community." The lecture takes place on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Siegfried Hall, St. Jerome's University, located on the University of Waterloo campus. Kmiecic graduated from St. Jerome's in 1975 with a BA in History and holds a Master's degree in Public Administration from Queen's University. Her varied career includes working on settlement services for refugees and immigrants in Australia, establishing departments of Public Security, and Citizenship & Immigration for the Government of Canada, directing policy tables on excellence in government for the Public Policy Forum and serving as a Deputy Commissioner in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. She is currently Senior Vice-President, Strategic Management, for United Way of Canada -- Centraide Canada, helping to redirect that national organization's activities from an exclusive focus on fundraising to a more direct role in preventing societal problems through community building and social investment. Her lecture will address the ways in which each of us can express our personal values through our life's work. Unethical conduct in business and government -- sometimes leading to corrupt practices -- is the inevitable consequence of a culture in which personal integrity is willingly sacrificed to questionable ends. At the same time, much of the good that is collectively accomplished springs directly from individuals choosing to enact their personal values within a work context. Kmiecic draws on her experience in government and non-profit organizations both in Canada and elsewhere to demonstrate how organizations and communities can and must be shaped by individuals and teams with strongly held values. The Fr. Norm Choate Distinguished Graduate Award is named for a former president of St. Jerome's University and has been presented since 1986 to graduates who have excelled in their professional lives and volunteer activities. St. Jerome's University is federated with UW.
