Athabasca University's Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) is a 24-month program, delivered primarily online, designed for working professionals who want to advance and enhance their respective business knowledge and credentials and career opportunities. By focussing on the primary areas affecting 'organizational performance,' the EMBA program aims to develop students' analytical and decision-making capabilities, leadership and interpersonal skills, management abilities, and 'strategic organizational' perspectives, and 'explore new directions in management thinking and practice.' One of the key components of the EMBA program is the requirement that students apply their coursework to their real-world workplace; this is to ensure that what students learn can more readily have 'immediate workplace impacts and extremely high absorption and retention of knowledge.' The EMBA is divided into three Phases. Phase 1 provides students with 'a solid foundation in the key areas of management' via 'six core courses, followed by a comprehensive examination.' Phase 2 and Phase 3 offer students the opportunity to take classes in 'more advanced general management topics' and to specialize in a particular area of business. The program's finale consists of an applied project on a specific topic that the student chooses in consultation with 'an academic supervisor;' this project affords the student 'the opportunity to apply the program's key concepts to a real-life business situation of particular interest to' the student.
