Overview

The Faculty of Law (http://www.law.uwo.ca/) and the Faculty of Health Sciences (http://www.uwo.ca/fhs/) are seeking an outstanding scholar and educator for a tenure-track or tenured position, effective July 1, 2014 (negotiable). The successful candidate will be jointly appointed in the two Faculties and hold a cross appointment in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/). His or her home faculty will be Faculty of Law. The successful candidate will help advance the health law and policy field within these three academic units.

The candidate will also play a role in shaping the University's research and curriculum priorities in the health law and policy field, and in raising the University's academic and public profile in this area. Western University and its affiliated teaching hospitals and research institutes are among Canada's premier centers for health research and education. The University's reputation in the health field has been established by dedicated researchers and educators, commitment to social responsibility and an affinity for strategic partnerships.

Responsibilities

The candidate will have primary responsibility for developing the Faculty of Law's health law curriculum and will be expected to teach a course(s) in the Faculty. The Faculty has been a leader in curriculum development and health policy reform, particularly in relation to impaired driving and substance abuse matters. It is now looking to expand its course offerings and research, both within the Faculty and in conjunction with other academic units. The Faculty of Law has attracted outstanding applicants with academic research interests in the health law and policy field to its Master of Laws (LLM), Master of Studies in Law (MSL) and PhD Programs.

In partnership with the Faculty of Law, the School of Health Studies in the Faculty of Health Sciences offers an undergraduate course in health law and policy to health science students and other Western undergraduates. The Faculty of Health Sciences is intent on maintaining this course and expanding its course offerings in the health law and policy area including developing its graduate-level health law and policy initiatives. The School of Health Studies is one of six Schools within the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Faculty currently offers a number of Masters and PhD Programs. The successful candidate will support a range of these teaching and related activities together with other members of the Faculties of Law and Health Sciences.

The candidate will also help shape the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry's new 12-month Master of Public Health Program (https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/publichealth/mph). The first cohort of students was admitted in September 2013 and enrolment will increase. This interdisciplinary program is taught using the case-based method of instruction and experience with this teaching approach would be an asset. In addition to teaching the half-course in Health Policy, Law and Equity, the candidate would be expected to participate in supervising students in their practicum assignments.

Experience and Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who have proven track records in teaching and scholarship in the health law and policy field. Applicants will be expected to have a JD/LLB and a Master or PhD degree in law or a health- related field.
