Overview Organization: University of Alberta, Nielsen's Applied Conservation Lab, Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute Salary: $2500-$3500/month; Travel, accommodation and food will be provided while in the field. Start Date: Flexible, Summer 2014. We are flexible in terms of the time commitment we accept, although a minimum of 3-4 weeks in July or early August is expected. Full time summer positions (May-Aug) are available. Applications for this job will be used to fill 2 different positions conducting ecological field work at remote sites in northern Alberta.

Responsibilities Position 1: Rare Plant Technicians will conduct vascular plant surveys at remote sites in northern Alberta to augment existing monitoring, to test new methods of monitoring rare plants, and to better understand factors affecting patterns of plant rarity in the boreal forest. Position 2: Reclamation Technicians will conduct vegetation and soil surveys to evaluate ecological recovery of reclaimed wellsites in forested lands. Fieldwork will be completed by teams of 2-3 from late June to late August. While training is provided, preference will be given to people with well-developed vascular plant ID skills. Duties outside of the field season will include assisting with planning field logistics, general prepping for field work, training, and data processing.

Experience and Qualifications -Strong vascular plant identification skills -Background or education in botany, horticulture, biology, ecology or related field -Previous field work experience (including data collection, GPS & navigation, ATV's (desired), and working in remote conditions) -Willingness to work long hours and an atypical schedule for part of the summer -Valid Class 5 Drivers License -Experience working with soils and heavy lifting would be an asset for the reclamation technician positions
