Staff Lawyer, Clinic Resource Office (L02) Job Title: Clinic Resource Office Staff Lawyer Assignment: This is a permanent position. Location: Clinic Resource Office, Provincial Office, Atrium on Bay, 40 Dundas Street West, Toronto. Area of Search: This position is open to legal clinic and SLASS lawyers, LAO lawyers, and external lawyers. Reports To: Director, Clinic Resource Office Primary Function: Work on important and interesting poverty law and equality issues with a team committed to high quality legal services. Use your clinic law expertise and superior analytical and writing skills to provide legal advice and opinions, create and maintain a range of publications in housing law and related areas, and provide legal services in support of a variety of clinic system and SLASS activities.


Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities:

  • Legal research; writing a range of publications from short website postings to comprehensive research memoranda; providing litigation support - all focused on housing law and related areas
  • Providing legal, strategic and practice advice to clinic lawyers and community legal workers
  • Participation in regional and provincial clinic CLE/training events
  • Possible other project work in accordance with interests and skills

  • Experience and Qualifications

    Required Skills & Experience:

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada
  • Called to the bar for a minimum of four years
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Expertise in, and experience practicing, housing law on behalf of tenants
  • Experience practicing one or more other major areas of clinic law (social assistance, CPP, EI, criminal injuries compensation, workers' compensation, human rights & the Charter as they intersect with clinic law)
  • Demonstrated superior legal research skills with traditional and electronic research sources
  • Strong computer skills (including demonstrated advanced ability with Word 2010)
  • Adept at working in a team environment
  • Able to work with shifting priorities in fast-paced work environment
  • Experience at an Ontario clinic or SLASS Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Familiarity with CRO website and practice resources
  • Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint
  • Superior knowledge of administrative law and procedure
  • Publication experience
  • Court litigation experience
  • Experience delivering legal training presentations
  • Ability to speak, read and write French would be an asset
