Pulp and Paper Process Technician - New Brunswick Community College

New Brunswick Community College's Pulp and Paper Process Technician is a 60-credit co-operative program, which may be completed in 2 years, combines technical and practical training to prepare students 'for careers in the pulp and paper industry.' The Program's class-based components provides students the 'knowledge and understanding of the science, processes, and equipment used in pulp and paper manufacturing.' The Program's 4-month work term will offer 'hands-on industrial experience in a state-of-the-art mill' and will take place 'from April to August.' The latter may require students to work 'at sites other than in Saint John.' Among the major topics to be covered are blueprint reading, chemistry, and communications. computers, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), electricity. environmental control, health and safety, instrumentation and process control, mathematics, papermaking, physics, and pulping (chemical and mechanical).

Career-wise, graduates generally seek careers in various aspects of the pulp and paper industries, particularly as process operators. The forecast for career opportunities in this industry is positive. It is expected that 'skilled pulp and paper workers' will be in demand, especially after 2008, 'in Saint John and other New Brunswick centres' as more workers are reaching the age of retirement.

To be eligible for the Program, applicants must have a High School Diploma, or equivalent, such as an Adult High School Diploma or GED Diploma of High School Equivalency. Applicants must also have successfully completed Grade 11 Math Part A and B (Level 2). The J.D. Irving Limited Training Incentives Program offers financial award opportunities to students accepted in the Pulp and Paper Process Technician program.
