PROGRAM WEBSITE Pulp and Paper Operations - Malaspina University-College Malaspina University-College's 9-month Pulp and Paper Operations certificate program utilizes theoretical and practical education to provide students with knowledge of all aspects of the pulp and paper industry. Among the major topics to be covered are computer skills, environmental awareness, power and recovery, pulp and paper processes, and work safety. Students will be provided 'with a strong theoretical understanding of the processes required to produce pulp and paper, knowledge of the skills required to operate the various equipment, and the quality control systems used to meet product and environmental standards.' Moreover, students will 'gain on-site experience' by spending 'time in local pulp and paper mills.' Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills for entry-level employment in the pulp and paper industry. Typically, individuals entering this industry will start off on shift work. To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must possess a high school or British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma. Applicants must also undergo 'assessment testing in general reading comprehension, along with industry-oriented testing in math, mechanical reasoning, spatial reasoning and abstract reasoning,' submit a personal profile, and participate 'in an industry orientation process.' The latter can include 'a mill orientation tour' and/or 'a selection interview.' Preference will be given to applicants who meet all academic requirements but who have also taken Chemistry and Physics 11 and Mathematics 12, can demonstrate commitment 'as determined through the selection interview,' have a high level of achievement on assessment tests, and have work experience. The Program has limited admission and thus not all applicants 'who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements' will be accepted. Because the pulp and paper industry is often physically demanding. Malaspina states that individuals interested in the Program must be in good health and physically fit in order to be able to complete all required tasks and partake in 'in the mill-based components of the program.'
