PROGRAM WEBSITE Pulp & Paper Operations Certificate - College of New Caledonia The Pulp and Paper Operations Certificate offered by the College of New Caledonia, and taught at the latter's Mackenzie and Prince George campuses, is a 7-month program designed for individuals who aspire 'to increase their employability in pulp and paper mills.' The Program is provincially recognized and has been developed in association with Malaspina University College in Nanaimo and local industry to ensure that it exposes students to the skills required by employers. The Program will typically include 25 hours of the Paper Processes course being spent 'onsite in Mackenzie, using mill-based resources' and 100 hours of work experience 'in a mill environment.' The latter may require students to follow shift scheduling. Career-wise, graduates usually seek employment in the pulp and paper industry primarily in mills. Graduates who find employment will most often labour in general 'and utility work in any area of the mill operations' including 'cleanup and assistance to field operators.' It is not uncommon for entry-level positions to involve working compressed 12-hour shifts. Application to the Program is a 3-stage process. Firstly, applicants must have completed Grade 12, or Advanced CCP Certificate and submit 'a brief hand-written paper summarizing interest in the sector, supported by past activities and future career goals.' Secondly, applicants must take general reading comprehension test and industry-related mathematics and abstract, mechanical, and spatial reasoning examinations. Applicants will sign up for these tests 'when they apply to the program.' The tests will take about a total of 3 hours to complete. Thirdly, once the examinations are complete, applicants 'who qualify for the program will be contacted for a' mandatory 'mill orientation tour and an industry-based selection interview.' Applicants who fail to qualify 'will be contacted to discuss opportunities for upgrading.'
