PROGRAM WEBSITE
Advanced Security Management - Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology

Combining technical/theoretical and practical learning, the Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology's 1-year Advanced Security Management graduate certificate program is designed to prepare students for employment in public safety and security. The Program will allow students to 'meet and exceed new provincial standards for security personnel in Ontario' and is taught by 'professionals who are currently working in high levels of the security industry' to ensure that students acquire the relevant knowledge and skill to make them immediately employable upon graduation. Among the major topics to be covered are Event Security, Forensic Identification, Guns and Gangs, Media Relations, Suspect Profiling, and Youth Gambling. Students will acquire specialized training and certifications in Automatic External Defibrillator, Basic Emergency Management, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Possession and Acquisition Firearms License, Security Supervisor, Standard First Aid, Terrorism and Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Use of Force.

The Program will also include experiential learning opportunities via field placements, including '40 hours security industry placement per semester,' and a week of workshops on such issues as Bomb Disposal, Canine Unit/Drug Investigation, Edged Weapon Tactics, Leadership Techniques, Mock Disasters, the Campbell Commission, and Vehicle Extrication. To be eligible for admission, applicants must have a 'College diploma in Police Foundations or Law and Security Administration or equivalent combination of education and related experience.' Applicants must also provide a 'resume and postsecondary transcripts.'

The Program may be of particular interest to individuals who have a college diploma want to continue their education without a long-term commitment to university, enhance their resumes or portfolios, or expand their opportunities for employment in the security industry. The Program may also be of interest to those aspiring to a career in policing but who are too young to be seriously considered for a position in the field and/or are waiting for their resume to be processed. On average, new police recruits are '25 years old and the hiring process in' in policing can 'take up to 1 year.'

Employment-wise, graduates may pursue careers in various areas of security. Career opportunities exist in such areas as Amusement and Recreation Industries, Armored Security Services, Corrections Workers, Crisis Management, Executive Protection, Federal, Provincial or Local Government Security, Healthcare Security, Information Systems Security, Police Services, Security Consulting or Officers, Special Event Security, Terrorism Counteraction, Transportation Security, and Utility and Nuclear Systems Security, among others. Graduates may also be able to pursue further educational opportunities 'at Mohawk and other colleges' and/or a degree at various universities.

Students should be aware that the Program will provide them with the requirements to pursue employment in security and related areas. However, some employers and/or careers may require employees to have credentials beyond those supplied by the Program. Furthermore, having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the security and other areas of the Criminal Justice field as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history.
