Combining theoretical and practical education, Grant MacEwan College's Diploma in Correctional Services prepares students for employment, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in criminal justice or related fields. Emphasizing protection, rehabilitation, and re-integration, the Program will focus on the role of correctional services in protecting 'the public from offenders' while also providing 'assistance for offenders to become law-abiding citizens.' Students will also be given opportunities to develop specialization in areas of their choice such as 'addictions, mental health, working with young offenders, or specific cultural populations.' The Program may completed in 2 years through full-time studies at the MacEwan South campus or it can be completed 'entirely through part-time learning, with the courses being offered either in teleconference format or through on-line distance delivery.'

The Program's first year gives students 'a foundation in the criminal justice system.' The latter includes all those elements that attempts to manage, punish, and prevent crime such as private and public law enforcement agencies and corrections, the judicial system, and related domains like Customs and Excise, Immigration, and Social Services. A study of the criminal justice system typically involves an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis and understanding of crime, including its causes, consequences, management, and prevention, drawing from such academic fields as Behaviour Sciences, Law, Political Science, Psychology, Research Methods, and Sociology, among others. As such, the first year of the Program will include course in areas like criminology, history, law, and sociology including 'a historical overview of corrections policies and procedures' and a 'study of the criminal code and other legislation.'

The second year of the Program will see 'students build on their theory base with skill development courses that focus' on specific issues of crime and criminal groups and the various strategies and techniques that can be employed to understand. approach, and deal with them, as well as continuing to take courses from other fields, like counseling and psychology.. For example, during the second year, students will be focus n working with certain crisis situations, 'offender groups,' and 'substance abuse issues.' The Program also includes 'focused, professional field placements' whose goal is to 'give students the opportunity to test and evaluate their theoretical learning in real situations.' Students are required to demonstrate that they are not only able to understand the theory behind Correctional Services but also apply it to real-world circumstances.

Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of criminal justice or related fields. Career-wise, graduates have been employed 'in every corner of the criminal justice system' including provincial and 'federal prison systems,' and 'working with adults and youth in a variety of community-based and institutional settings.' Moreover, graduates can also be employed as Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers, Customs, Parole, or Probation Managers or Officers, Provincial and Federal Corrections Case Workers, Managers, Officers, or Supervisors, or Youth Work Managers or Supervisors, among any other positions.

Graduates may also further their respective training and education at various colleges, universities, and institutions often with advanced credit. Through one of the College's existing transfer agreements, graduates can, for example, 'apply the diploma' towards the Bachelor of Professional Arts - Criminal Justice degree from Athabasca University, Bachelor of Applied Corrections degree at Lethbridge Community College, Bachelor of Applied Justice at Mount Royal College, Bachelor of Human Justice Degree at the University of Regina, or Bachelor of Arts or Science in Criminal Justice at the University of Great Falls. Graduates can also apply up to '30 units of credit towards a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) degree at the University of Alberta.'

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must either 'present an Alberta high school diploma (or equivalent) and be 18 years of age by the end of the first term' or, for mature students who do not have a secondary school diploma, be '20 years of age or older and out of full-time high school for at least one year by the beginning of the intake term.' All applicants are also usually 'required to submit two letters of reference and an autobiography.' The College reserves the right to request other admission criteria as determined by the Office of the Registrar. This may, and typically includes, a 'current clear Security Clearance' or for the applicant to be able 'to apply for a pardon and no open youth record' and a valid Standard First Aid certification.

All applicants who 'do not present ELA 30-1 with a minimum grade of 65 percent or English 30-2 with a minimum grade of 75 percent' must complete a skills appraisal, typically 'by the beginning of the intake term.' If the latter is required, 'applicants must successfully complete the writing portion AND be eligible to enter ENGL 111 OR must complete any developmental coursework with a minimum grade of C-.'

Furthermore, applicants must proof that they possess a level of English language proficiency acceptable to the College. This proof may be in the form of, for example, 'high school or post-secondary transcripts or proof of successful completion of standardized language evaluation,' such as the TOEFL.
