PROGRAM WEBSITE Law & Security Administration - Customs Administration - Sir Sandford Fleming College Combining theoretical and practical education, Sir Sandford Fleming College's 2-year Diploma in Law and Security Administration - Customs Administration exposes students to the knowledge and skills required to work in various areas of border security and related duties in both the private and public sectors. The first semester of the Program will share its curriculum with the College's other Law and Justice diploma programs and provides 'a solid knowledge base and an overview of the career opportunities available' as well as an opportunity to explore 'options and to make an informed decision about' one's 'program and career choice.' Upon successful completion of the first semester, students can either advance with the current program or transfer to another diploma program within the School of Law and Justice. From the second semester onwards, students enrolled in the Customs Administration program will focus their studies in this field. The Customs Administration diploma will prepare students 'for the demands of being on the front line of global trade and law enforcement,' including exposing learners to 'customs legislation, procedures and documentation' and global diversity as well as developing their respective 'computer, communications, and critical thinking skills.' Moreover, students will acquire 'in-depth knowledge of customs laws and regulations, enforcement, and interviewing techniques' and be 'trained in the latest technologies and enforcement strategies - techniques that have made the Canadian customs administration a model for many emerging nations.' Students will also be given the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via a 4-week work experience 'placement in a relevant private or public agency, or business.' Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of Customs or related fields. For example, common entry-level work for graduates include positions with Canada Border Services, customs brokerages, freight forwarders, and private businesses. Common job titles assumed by graduates include customs co-ordinator/specialist, customs inspector, customs research analyst, import analyst, release classification analyst, and trade compliance specialist. According to the College, 'graduate statistics indicate that customs brokers' salaries range from $25,000.00 - $30,000.00, with a range of $27,000.00 - $35,000.00 for those working with private companies. Customs inspectors can make a salary in the $42,000.00 - $47,000.00 range.' Students should be aware that some positions in Customs may require further training beyond the diploma, and, because of the nature of the work, those with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in this field. Graduates may also further their respective training and education at various colleges, universities, and institutions often with advanced credit. For example, graduates can take advantage of one of the College's existing transfer agreements with Athabasca University, Ryerson University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, and University of Windsor. To be eligible for the Program, applicants must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) 'with the majority of credits at the College (C) and Open (O) level, including two English credits in the College (C) stream.' Individuals 'who do not possess an OSSD, but who will be 19 years of age before the commencement of classes, and 'can demonstrate potential for success in college studies' may apply via "mature student status." The latter, however, 'will be required to write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test.' Prospective students who have graduated university are eligible for 'direct entry into second semester of this program,' and can this 'graduate in as little as 12 months.'
