Security System Implementation and Design - Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning

Security primarily deals with protection of people, property, resources, and/or information against criminal acts, such as theft; those involved in security are also active in studying and controlling, or at least managing, the causes of losses and prevent future losses. Modern security measures are often 'accompanied by the introduction of more and more complex security systems and a demand for skilled experts who can manage their design and implementation.'

Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. the first Canadian Security Association (CSA)-approved post-secondary institute in Canada, offers a 2-year Security System Implementation and Design diploma program designed to train 'professionals for the security industry,' particularly 'in the design, installation, computer integration, and even sales and marketing of security systems.' Students will be equipped with 'the mathematical and basic principles of system design' as well as knowledge 'of the latest alarm technologies' such as access control systems, closed circuit television, 'and many of the locking and lighting systems common in industry today.' Participants will also be given 'the opportunity to build and install alarm systems.'

During the second year of the Program, qualifying participants will be able to apply, practice, and enhance what they have learned in the classroom via work experience placements with security systems firms; in addition to the practical training benefits, these Placements will enable learners to 'students build important contacts and references which can be valuable in their future careers.' A unique aspect of the Program is that it will offer CSA 'level 1 and 2 Alarm Technician courses as part of the program' thus allowing candidates to not only graduate with a diploma but also 'CSA certification which is quickly becoming the industry standard.

The Program has been primarily developed 'for secondary school graduates who are interested in working for' in the security systems industry either for companies, individuals, or through self-employment. Most graduates have found employment with 'alarm service and installation firms, alarm product distributors, security technology manufacturers, surveillance and investigation companies and locksmiths;' furthermore, graduates can be employed in such positions as installers, sales and service personnel, security system developers, and many more. According to the Sheridan, more than 80 percent of graduates obtain security industry, or 'related employment upon graduation.' Students should note, however, that because of the nature of the work, individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in this field as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including 'one English, Grade 12 (C or U) or two senior-level credits in English' and 'any Grade 11 or Grade 12 mathematics (C or U) or Grade 12 Mathematics.' Prospective students who do not have the aforementioned credentials may apply via mature student status. Applicants that are eligible for admission will be 'selected on the basis of previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).'

Furthermore, before commencing their respective work experience placements, 'students will be required, at their own expense, to have a current criminal record check completed.' Having 'a criminal record may make it more difficult for students to complete the program and find program-related employment after graduation.' Sheridan will provide more detail regarding the criminal record check requirement closer to the commencement of the Program.
