PROGRAM WEBSITE Bachelor of Applied Information Sciences (Information Systems Security) - Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning's 4-year Bachelor of Applied Information Sciences (Information Systems Security) provides learners 'with a fundamental understanding of' the 'core disciplines' of computer science while enabling them to develop specialization in information systems security. The latter primarily deals with managing or controlling the risks related to electronically, principally computer, processed, disseminated, and/or stored data, information, intelligence, and knowledge. Among the major topics to be covered are database, ecommerce, information systems, and network security, resource protection and applied cryptography, and technical and legal issues. Students will also 'participate in an eight-month, (back to back work terms) paid internship' following the completion of the Program's third year, and an internship fee will be charged for every work term. Students will be offered, by employers, various placements to enable the former 'to apply what they have learned and expand their technical expertise while exercising personal responsibility and honing their abilities to work in a team and make decisions.' Through the Japan Science and Technology Program, students may complete their respective internships in Japan. There is a global demand 'for information science professionals' expert in systems security and thus graduates are usually in high demand. Graduates typically pursue high-paying careers as, among other things, administrators or architects of internet solutions, databases, and/or network security, computer forensics experts, e-commerce application developers, internet security systems consultants, and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) experts. Moreover, graduates will be prepared write the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification. Managed by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, CISSP is widely regarded among the foremost certifications in the field. Furthermore, Sheridan has several agreements with universities allowing graduates to complete a Masters degree program in Information Systems Security or related areas. Such agreements exist with the Griffith University and the University of Western Sydney in Australia and the University of Denver, Colorado, USA. The latter, for example, allows graduates to 'enter an online Masters program in Applied Computer Information Systems with a specialty in Information Systems Security.' To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Applied Information Sciences, applicants must possess an 'Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including Grade 12 (U) English. In addition, applicants must have successfully completed 'any Grade 12 science (U or M) or Grade 12 Computer and Information Science (ICS4M) or Grade 12 Computer Engineering (ICE4M)...any Grade 12 mathematics (U)...3 other Grade 12 credits (U or M),' and have achieved an overall average of at least 65 percent. Sheridan will assess applicants 'on the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses.' Prospective students should also note that if they are accepted, because the Program makes heavy use of mobile computing, they will be required to either purchase their own laptop or rent one through Sheridan. Students in the Program will be eligible for special scholarships from Cisco Systems.
