Law & Security Administration - Sault College

Sault College's 2-year Diploma in Law and Security Administration is primarily designed for individuals aspiring to a career, career advancement, and/or further education in the security field, particularly in 'customs administration and brokering and public safety.' The primary goal of the Program is to equip students with the communications and interpersonal skills as well as an understanding of human behaviour and of 'the development, purpose, and operation of the legal system generally, and law enforcement related to customs, immigration, and security specifically,' including the 'security operations to protect persons and property in both the private and industrial settings,' order to prepare learners 'to function more effectively and humanely in professions which demand mature and responsible reactions.' Moreover, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of fire fighting 'and emergency care operations,' including the basics of National fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard training and the recognition, control and evaluation of hazards.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in security and related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for employment in various government security agencies at the both federal and provincial levels, private security firms, and with numerous other employers. For instance, graduates may assume positions with Canada Customs and Immigration, customs brokering operations, Firefighting, and emergency care, industrial security, and security investigations. Students should be aware that some careers in the security field may require further training; in addition, individuals possessing a criminal record may find it difficult to attain employment in this field.

Graduates of the Program may also advance their education and/or training in security or related areas, such as conservation enforcement, corrections, court and tribunal agents, criminal justice, criminology, firefight and emergency care, investigation, police, and probation, at various institutes and colleges across Canada. For example, students can take advantage of the College's International University College Division Advantage's 'Sault College and Lake Superior State University (Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan) shared diploma and degree study options in this program area.'

To be eligible for admission to the Law and Security Administration program, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School diploma, including Grade 12 English (C) ENG4C; individuals who do not have the aforementioned credential may apply via 'mature student status.' Furthermore, all applicants must have 'a current (within two years) Police Records Search', as those enrolled in the Program 'will have unsupervised access to vulnerable persons, and valid certification in CPR (Level C), First Aid, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Students must 'provide copies of their certification' and are responsible for maintaining annual CPR and first aid certifications throughout their program.' All costs associated with the Police Records Search or certifications are the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants 'will be tested to determine their reading comprehension and writing skills.' The College recommends that applicants also 'have some keyboarding and word processing skills.'
