Network and Security Support Analyst - Northern Alberta Institute of Technology

Information security deals primarily with managing or controlling the risks related to electronically, principally computer, created, processed, disseminated, and/or stored data, information, intelligence, and knowledge. Northern Alberta Institute of Technology's Network and Security Support Analyst will prepare students with 'the academic, practical, and professional development skills' to pursue careers, career advancement, and/or further education in 'the rapidly expanding Information Technology industry.' Moreover, graduates will possess the abilities to conduct research, demonstrate computer networking, critical thinking, oral and written, and teamwork skills, 'maintain a high standard of professionalism,' and solve various information technology industry-related problems. The Program is 38 weeks in duration consisting of '32 weeks of highly intensive formal classroom instruction and hands-on practical work' and 6 weeks of work experience in a relevant setting where students can apply and practice what they have learned at the College.

A unique feature of the Program is that it provides students, through its curriculum, with the 'knowledge foundation to' challenge a variety of information technology security certification examinations. The latter 'include MicrosoftÆs 7-exam MCSE certification: CompTIAÆs A+, Security+ and Linux+; and CiscoÆs CCNA.' Students should be aware that while courses in the Program will 'cover much of the knowledge required to challenge these exams, in some instances additional study and/or work experience will be necessary for a successful exam challenge.' Further details regarding challenging certification examinations may be obtained 'from the program coordinator.'

Graduates may pursue careers, career advancement, and/or further education in information security or related areas. Individuals trained in information security are in high demand around the world and thus graduates are usually presented with various career opportunities private and public sector organizations such as crown corporations, IT consulting firms, public sector organizations, security firms, various corporations, like those in the financial, telecommunications, and utilities industries. Graduates may be hired as Computer Security Consultants, Digital Investigative Specialists, Information Security Administrators, Information Technology Security Analysts, Investigators, and Network Security Specialist, among others. Students should be aware that, because of the natures of the work, many employers may be reluctant to hire individuals with a criminal record. Graduates may also pursue further education in information technology or related fields at various institutes and colleges across Canada.

The Program does not have any 'official academic prerequisites.' However, the College does advise prospective students to acquire 'proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of applications (specifically Word and PowerPoint), strong inter-personal skills, sufficient keyboarding skills, aptitude for working with computers,' and 'a strong personal drive for success' prior to applying for the Program. Furthermore, because the Program has 'limited enrolment, a selection process will be in place,' applicants 'may be required to write a no-charge skills assessment test and must submit a resume and schedule a personal interview with the program coordinator before acceptance into the program.'
