Law & Security Administration - Corrections - Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology

Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology 2-year Diploma in Law and Security Administration - Corrections exposes students to the knowledge and skills required to work in various areas of corrections and related fields and agencies. Students will acquire intensive training to develop those abilities that will enable them to work effectively in a diverse range of areas in corrections, including community resource centres, group homes, halfway houses, institutional settings for adults, private agencies, and youth correctional facilities. The first year of the Program shares its curriculum with the College's Police Foundations program. During the first year, students will acquire a general introduction to and overview of law and security administration and criminal justice through such topics as Communications, Community Services, Criminal and Civil Law, Criminology, First Nations People, Psychology, and Sociology.

The second year of the Program will further develop the knowledge and skills introduced in the first but year but students will be able to select courses that focus on training in Corrections, such as Case Management, Conflict Management, Correctional Worker, Provincial and Federal Offences, and Youth in Conflict with the Law. Students are encouraged to also partake in a non-compulsory field experience that will allow students to learn about corrections directly in a relevant setting and from those involved in the field. To be eligible for admission to the Law and Security Administration program, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, which may include a GED, College and Career Preparation, and 'Grade 12 English, general, (70% guideline) advanced, C or U.' Prospective students 'should note that they must be able to take part in fitness and lifestyle courses throughout the four semesters of the program.'

Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of corrections or related areas. Career-wise, graduates can apply for positions in a myriad of aspects of both the federal and provincial correctional systems, including community-based partners. For example, at the federal level, graduates can assume employment as front-line correctional officers with the Correctional Service of Canada. At the provincial level, in Ontario, graduates can find jobs with as correctional officers or as youth workers with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services or the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Furthermore, graduates can begin careers in 'treatment, observation or detention centres and halfway houses.' Some careers, however, may require further training and/or certification, and individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in corrections and related areas.

Graduates may also pursue further their education in corrections, or related fields such as security or police work, at various institutes and colleges across Canada and internationally, often with advanced standing. The College has existing transfer agreements with Athabasca University, Brock University, Davenport University, Griffith University, Laurier Brantford - Wilfrid Laurier University, Ryerson University, Saginaw Valley State University, and University of Western Sydney.
