Law & Security Administration - Professional Security - Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology

Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology's 2-year Law and Security Administration - Professional Security program exposes students to the knowledge and skills required to work in various areas of security and related fields and agencies. The first year of the Program shares its curriculum with the College's Police Foundations program and is designed 'to familiarize the student with the criminal justice system and community affairs' and 'prepare the student to function more effectively and humanely in the commercial and industrial environment of private protection services.' The first year 'includes human studies to aid the student in understanding the normal and abnormal behaviour of people as individuals and as members of various social, political and cultural groups.'

During the Program's final, learners will take courses specifically geared toward preparing them 'for a successful career in the growing market for security professionals.' Such courses will 'provide study related to the management of guard services, security technology, private and internal investigation, emergency plans management, risk analysis and security auditing.' Moreover, the Program offers study opportunities in 'standards and legislation in the field of occupational health and safety,' the latter 'demands accurate and precise use of both oral and written communications and this is reflected in the program content.' To be eligible for admission to the Professional Security program, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent, 'with Grade 12 English, (C) or (U).' Prospective students that do not meet the aforementioned requirements are but who are interested in applying are advised to contact a Lambton College counselor.

Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in security, corrections, and related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for employment in government security agencies at both the federal and provincial levels, private security firms, and numerous other employers. For example, graduates may assume positions in correctional and youth detention centres, entertainment industry (such as casinos and special events), high risk and task specific escorts (like money transfers and bodyguard work), municipal by-law enforcement, national and provincial government asset protection (such as government buildings and nuclear power plants), on board security roles (airplanes, trains, and transit systems, for example), and public and private security. Students should be aware that some positions will require further training and education, and those who possess a criminal record may find it difficult to attain employment in security, corrections, and related areas. It is up to students to 'determine employment entrance criteria' of prospective employers and ensure those criteria are met.

Students may also advance their education and/or training in security or related areas, such as conservation enforcement, corrections, court and tribunal agents, criminal justice, criminology, investigation, police, and probation, at various institutes and colleges across Canada, often with advanced standing. For example, the College has existing transfer agreements that enable graduates to transfer into the Bachelor of Professional Arts, Criminal Justice program at Athabasca University or Bachelor of Applied Science at Siena Heights University in Drive Adrian, Michigan, USA.
