Holland College's Correctional Officer certificate program aims to provide students 'the knowledge and skills needed for a career in federal and provincial correctional services,' or related areas. The Program is taught at the Atlantic Police Academy at Slemon Park and is 'approximately 36 weeks' in duration 'including 9 weeks of required on-the-job training.' The Program will expose students to the knowledge and skills to work in a wide range of settings especially working with individuals that are involved or who are at risk of becoming involved in criminal activity, are incarcerated, or are currently undergoing rehabilitation and/or reintegration into society. Further, students will acquire the abilities to 'assess offender and inmate needs, assess problems, learn about potential problems and issues and investigate incidents' by using various 'interview strategies and techniques,' 'communicate effectively using a variety of techniques and different mediums of expression in a wide variety of settings,' limit and/or 'prevent emergency situations,' respond to a wide range of emergencies, understand, evaluate, identify, and influence human behaviour, including assaultive, conflict, deceptive, and/or manipulative behaviour, and use various control, security, and verbal tactics and interventions, including weapons, to create and/or 'maintain a safe and secure environment.'

Students will also become familiar 'with the case management and offender program process' including 'the intelligence process in a correctional setting,' and learn how to 'prepare intelligence reports based on scenario participation,' including 'developing sources of information, handling informants, and evaluating information reliability.' Working as a Correctional Officer can be physically and demanding and thus students will also learn how to manage stress and maintain 'physical and mental alertness.'

The main goal of the Program is for graduates to possess the knowledge and skills that meet or surpass the requirements for professional positions in federal and/or provincial jurisdictions and for career promotion in employment relating to adult and young offender services at the federal and provincial levels as established by the Correctional Service of Canada. Graduates may pursue employment in various aspects of the criminal justice system including as Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers, Customs, Parole, or Probation Managers or Officers, Provincial and Federal Corrections Case Workers, Managers, Officers, or Supervisors, or Youth Work Managers or Supervisors. Graduates may also further their training and education at various colleges, universities, and institutions.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants 'must be 19 years of age or older by December 31 of the year for which' they are applying and have successfully completed 'Grade 12 or equivalent with credits at or above the general level.' Moreover, applicants must have valid level C Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR and driver's license, submit evidence 'of Canadian Citizenship (birth certificate) or Landed Immigrant Status (documentation from Immigration Canada),' undergo a Police Records Check (CPIC) and 'have no findings of guilt.' Applicants must also include a completed 'Holland College medical form,' 'three completed reference forms,' and a 'including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other' relevant information.' Applicants may be required to undergo further assessment and/or an interview.
