PROGRAM WEBSITE Law and Security Administration - Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology's 2-year Diploma in Law And Security Administration program exposes students to the knowledge and skills required to work 'in law enforcement and provides instruction that is appropriate for a wide range in careers including policing, private security and the Canadian Forces.' The primary goal of the Program 'is to enable the student to function effectively in a career that demands maturity, self-discipline, organizational skills, a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to communicate effectively.' As such, in addition to industry-specific training enabling students 'to manage risk, identify and collect evidence, conduct investigations and prepare appropriate written reports,' learners will develop personal traits that will help them succeed in the field such as 'communication skills, human understanding and physical fitness.' The first year of the Program will provide students with a general education during which learners will be introduced to the Canadian criminal justice system, Criminology, human behaviour, and the development of the aforementioned personal traits. The final year of the Program advances the knowledge and skills introduced during the previous year but the focus will be on developing students' competencies as they relate specifically to Law and Security Administration. During the second year, major topics of discourse will be Abnormal Psychology, Conflict Management, Enforcement Agencies, Evidence, Investigation Procedures, Public Safety and Security, Security Guard Duties and Responsible, Security Guard: Powers of Arrest, Security Management, Statute Law, and Technical Reporting. Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in law enforcement and related areas like policing, security, and the Canadian Forces. For example, graduates may apply for positions in Canada Customs, private security firms, public police services, including the Ontario Provincial Police, the Canadian Forces, and various Provincial Ministries. Students should note that some careers may require further training beyond the diploma level, and those with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in law enforcement and related areas. Graduates may also further their education in law enforcement and related fields at various institutes, universities, and colleges across Canada, often with advanced credit. Students may, for instance, take advantage of one of the College's existing transfer agreements. Graduates may transfer into the Bachelor of Arts (Law and Justice) at Algoma University, Bachelor of Professional Arts (Criminal Justice) at Athabasca University, Bachelor of Arts (general) in Law and Justice at Laurentian University, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology and Justice at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith University, or Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (General) or Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (Criminalistics, Law Enforcement, Loss Control, or Public Safety) at Lake Superior State University. To be eligible for admission into the Law and Security Administration program, applicants must either possess an OSSD, OS:IS, or equivalent, or apply under mature student status. All applicants must also have certification in Standard First Aid and Level "C" CPR; students may also be required to undergo a criminal record check. Applicants who are high school 'graduates of the new' Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) curriculum must possess an OSSD including 'any grade 12 English (C), (U) or (M) and any grade 11 mathematics (C), (U) or (M).' The College recommends that prospective students 'acquire computer competency in relevant software' and that those still in high school take grade 11 physical education (O). Applicants who are 'graduates of the old' Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OS:IS) curriculum must possess an OS:IS Diploma with credits in 'any 2 senior level English (general or advanced) and any senior level mathematics (general or advanced).' The College recommends that such applicants take 'any senior level in physical education' and acquire 'computer competency in relevant software.'
