Information Systems Security - Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology

Information security deals primarily with managing or controlling the risks related to electronically, principally computer, created, processed, disseminated, and/or stored data, information, intelligence, and knowledge. Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology's 1-year Certificate in Information Systems Security provides students with the knowledge and skills 'to assess, recommend and implement where applicable, necessary technical and managerial safeguards to ensure the security of networked computer systems.' Furthermore, the Program 'focuses evenly between managerial/administrative security elements' like business continuity and disaster recovery planning, investigations, policy development, regulatory issues, threat risk assessments, 'and technical solutions related to information systems security.' The latter includes wired and wireless networks, 'security features, techniques and hardware, communications security, fundamentals of cryptography, and security software applications for trusted communication, intrusion detection and penetration testing.'

Students will also be given standard 'software application training for Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Entrust Authority 7.0,' which is 'sponsored by Entrust Inc.' The ultimate goal of the Program is to enable graduates to be able 'to influence and/or develop security policy, make recommendations for the protection of sensitive corporate data, in support of secure electronic commerce and business information privacy requirements.'

Graduates may pursue careers, career advancement, and/or further education in information security or related areas. Individuals trained in information security are in high demand around the world and thus graduates are usually presented with various career opportunities private and public sector organizations such as 'managed security service firms, IT consulting firms, mid-size to large corporations (financial, telecom, utilities, etc.), public sector organizations, and crown corporations.'

Graduates often pursue positions whose starting wages are $35,000.00 to $40,000.00 and higher depending on location and the level of skill the graduate possesses. For example, graduates may be hired as Computer Forensics Examiners, Computer Security Consultants, Digital Investigative Specialists, Information Security Administrators, Information Technology Security Analysts, Investigators, and Network Security Specialist, among others. Students should be aware that most employers in the field will expect prospective employees 'to have a high degree of integrity, a strong sense of responsibility and no prior criminal convictions.'

Graduates may also further their studies in information security or related fields, like corrections, customs, and/or policing, at various colleges, universities, and institutions in Canada. Graduates can also pursue security certifications like Cisco Systems Security Profession (CSSP), CISCO Certified Network Professional (CCNP), and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE).

The College expects that students 'will have a high level of commitment and dedication towards the program, good oral and written communication skills, and a willingness to do literary research beyond the material presented in class.' To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must have at least 'a two-year community college diploma in an Information Technology,' or a 'related field or equivalent experience and training.' Applicants that lack 'formal academic requirements' may be required 'to complete a threshold knowledge test and submit an experiential portfolio.' International applicants are welcome but 'must provide proof of TOEFL score of 580 for the paper-based test, or 237 for the computer-based test, or equivalent.'
