PROGRAM WEBSITE Security Systems Technician - Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology's 48-week Security Systems Technician diploma 'is designed to prepare students for careers in the security and alarms systems industry' by equipping them with 'competence in designing, installing, servicing and troubleshooting security and alarm systems such as; intrusion detection systems, access control systems, wireless systems and closed-circuit TV systems.' The Program will include studies in computer applications, customer service, electrical and electronic fundamentals, measuring and testing devices, security concepts, and security surveys. Students will have the opportunity to apply, practice, and enhance what they have learned in the classroom via a 15-week work experience placement during the 3rd semester of the Program. During the Placement, students will work 'under the guidance of a coach installer' and 'experience the multifaceted world of the alarm industry.' Moreover, the Placement will enable students to 'develop and apply learned skills as an alarm installer in various industrial, commercial and residential sectors.' The Program has been primarily developed individuals interested in a career in the security systems industry either by working for companies, individuals, or through self-employment. Employment for graduates may be found in, among other places, alarm product distributors, alarm service and installation firms, security technology manufacturers, surveillance and investigation companies; furthermore, graduates can be employed in such positions as installers, sales and service personnel, security system developers, and many more. Students should note, however, that because of the nature of the work, individuals with a criminal record might find it difficult to obtain employment in this field as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history. To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must possess an 'Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.' Prospective students who earned an OSSD with credits for 'senior English and/or Mathematics courses at the Basic Level, Workplace or Open courses, will be tested to determine their eligibility for admissions.' Individuals who lack the aforementioned criteria but who are 19 years or older may apply via "mature student status." The eligibility of mature applicants may, however, 'be determined by academic achievement testing.' All applicants will be required to have completed Grade 12 English (ENG4C or equivalent). Students should note that in order to participate in the work experience placement, learners 'must submit proof of a clear police records check to the Program Department prior to the beginning of classes' via a police record check that can be obtained from any police department. All costs associated with this Check are the responsibility of the student. Candidates who possess an unpardoned criminal record may be disqualified for participation in the work experience placement as well as from graduating from the Program.
