Students will acquire knowledge of the 'key personnel and services within BC's youth justice system,' as well as of the application of 'basic concepts of criminal law' to the administration of the youth justice system. The Overview of the Youth Criminal Justice Act course provides students with 'an introduction to the Canadian Youth Criminal Justice Act.' Among the major topics to be covered by the Course are 'an overview of the main tenets and philosophy of the legislation, and the key sections in each major part of the Act.' Once an 'individual has been hired into a permanent,' position, he/she will undergo 'the Youth Probation Officer Basic Training certificate program.' This 'training involves successful completion of all required online courses, including assignments, quizzes and practical evaluations.' New employees must also 'meet the Ministry's performance criteria required for appointment to the position, which is evaluated over the first six months of employment.' Individuals interested in a career as a Youth Probation Officer should note that meeting the prerequisites for employment does not guarantee employment. Furthermore, having a criminal record can be an obstacle to one's chances of being employed as, because of the nature of the work, there is a reluctance to hire those with a criminal history.
