Adult Probation Officer - Justice Institute of British Columbia

The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), via the Corrections and Community Justice Division, offers distance and class-based courses designed for individuals employed or aspiring to a career in the field of criminal justice as Adult Probation Officers, Probation Officer 14s, or related positions. The Adult Probation Officer and Probation Officer 14 are responsible for the risk management of 'adult offenders in the community' in accordance with court orders. Among the chief duties of these Officers are assisting 'in the sentencing process by providing information which will help the court determine dispositions for offenders,' monitoring 'the probationer's compliance with the terms of probation' and assessing his/her potential to reoffend, enforcing 'court orders,' helping offenders achieve 'a non-criminal lifestyle,' and increasing 'public awareness of strategies to prevent crime and victimization.' These positions in the criminal justice system may be of particular interest to persons currently employed or volunteering in adult and/or youth correctional institutions or settings, including those outside of British Columbia, community, human, and/or social services, justice, law enforcement, and security.

Part of the pre-requisites to be considered for positions as either classification of Officer is the completion of 4 courses offered exclusively by the JIBC. These courses include the Adult Probation Officer and Community Corrections, Adult Probation and Criminal Court Process, Professional Ethics and Standards of Conduct (Community), and Sentencing Options and Post Sentence Supervision Orders. The aforementioned courses have 'no admission requirements and no screening process.' Moreover, completing said courses 'does not guarantee employment but is only one of the criteria necessary to apply for either position in British Columbia.'

Potential applicants should note that to be considered for either classification of Officer, completion of 'the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) to a minimum of Level 5' is required. In addition, to be considered for an Adult Probation Officer position, applicants 'must have a BSW or MSW; or a BA in Social Sciences; or a Law Degree from a recognized Canadian university.' To be considered for a Probation Officer 14 position, applicants 'must have a two-year diploma or two years of credit towards a Social Sciences or Human Services degree, or the equivalent from a Canadian university or college.'
