Law and Security Administration - Private Security - Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning

Combining theoretical and practical education, Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning: Law and Security Administration - Private Security 2-year Diploma in Law and Security Administration - Private Security is designed to equip learners with the a broad range of knowledge and skills required to pursue a career, career advancement, and/or further education in security, both in the private and public sectors, and relate areas. The Program employs 'a comprehensive curriculum that is responsive to legislative requirements for those in the private security field.'

Much of the time in the second year will spend in a practical learning environment, via 4 work experience placements, 'with a security-related agency, or in a private or public organization.' These work placements, which will be worth over 33 percent of the final year's total credits, will not only enable students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations but also learn directly on-the-job and from those employed in the field, like co-workers, employers, and supervisors. Students should note that these Placements 'may involve shift work and/or travel' and 'students must obtain certification in CPR (Basic Rescuer) and St. John Standard First Aid and a criminal record check' before being placed. All expenses related to travel, certification, and the criminal record check will be the responsibility of the student. Moreover, having a criminal history may pose an obstacle to obtaining placement; students with a criminal record should consult with a College advisor or the program coordinator to discuss this matter.

Graduates of the Program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of security and related areas of the criminal justice system. Career-wise, graduates may apply for employment in government security agencies at both the federal and provincial levels, private security firms, and numerous other employers. For example, graduates can pursue employment opportunities in airport security, corporate protection, hospital security, hotel protection, law enforcement agencies, private investigation, and retail loss prevention. Students should be aware that some jobs may require further training, depending on the demands of the employer, and individuals with a criminal record may find it difficult to find employment in security and other areas of criminal justice as many employers are reluctant to hire those with such a record. Graduates of the Program may also further their education in the criminal justice or related fields at numerous institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada, often with advanced standing.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent, including at least one Grade 12 English (C or U) course. Individuals who are 19 years or older by the Program start-date and do not have the aforementioned credentials may apply via "mature student status." Applicants who are eligible for admission 'will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).'

Applicants may be required to undergo a criminal record check; some employers for the work experience placement will require students to provide the results of the latter directly to them 'prior to the start of the placement.' Students with a criminal history or who do not supply a criminal record check 'may be limited in choice of field placement opportunities.' Furthermore, 'applicants should be aware of the physical demands of the field and explore possible field placement and employment-related standards before applying.'
