PROGRAM WEBSITE Law & Security Administration - Private Security - Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology 2-year Diploma in Law and Security Administration - Private Security exposes students to the knowledge and skills required to work in various areas of security and related fields and agencies. Students will 'discover the field of private security with emphasis on principles of loss prevention such as security surveys, reduction of shoplifting, policy design and information security.' Participants will also 'learn powers of arrest and non-violent crisis intervention' and how to 'surveillance and electronic security systems technology,' hone their 'interview and investigation techniques,' gain an appreciation for 'the importance of evidence collection, presentation and report writing,' and 'master risk assessment and management.' The first year of the Program shares its curriculum with the College's Police Foundations program. During the first year, students will acquire a general introduction to and overview of law and security administration and criminal justice through such topics as Communications, Community Services, Criminal and Civil Law, Criminology, First Nations People, Psychology, and Sociology. The second year of the Program will further develop the knowledge and skills introduced in the previous year but students will be able to select courses that focus on training in security including specialization opportunities in Electronic Security and Security Management. To be eligible for admission to the Law and Security Administration program, applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, which may include a GED, College and Career Preparation, and 'Grade 12 English, general, (70% guideline) advanced, C or U.' Prospective students 'should note that they must be able to take part in fitness and lifestyle courses throughout the four semesters of the program.' Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in security and related areas. Career-wise, graduates may, for instance, apply for employment in government-based security agencies in both the federal and provincial levels and in private security firms. Graduates often find employment in Amusement and Recreation Industries, Government Security, particularly Customs and Immigration, and the Security Industry. Graduates may assume such positions as Casino Security Officers, Corporate Security Specialists, Corrections Workers, Electronic Security Specialists, Loss Prevention/ Insurance/ Private Investigators, and Security Officers. Students should be aware that some careers in the security field may require further training; in addition, individuals possessing a criminal record may find it difficult to attain employment in this field. Graduates may also pursue further education in security, or related fields, such as corrections or police work, at various institutes and colleges across Canada and internationally, often with advanced standing. The College has existing transfer agreements with Athabasca University, Brock University, Davenport University, Griffith University, Laurier Brantford - Wilfrid Laurier University, Ryerson University, Saginaw Valley State University, and University of Western Sydney.
