PROGRAM WEBSITE Law and Security Administration - Private Security - Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology Durham College's 1-year Public and Private Investigations Graduate certificate 'is designed to provide opportunities for specific investigation training for graduates of college and university related programs.' The Program will equip learners with the knowledge and skills, particularly through 'practical focused course work,' preparing them 'for employment in the profession of public and private investigations' and enabling them 'to successfully undertake investigations as members of a specific investigation department, or as private investigators.' Students will have their 'competency-based training and education' focussed areas that include basic photography, critical thinking and problem solving, evidence and investigation techniques, fraud examination, interviewing and statement-taking, and surveillance. Graduates of the Program may pursue careers, career advancements, or further educational opportunities in security, investigations, and other related aspects of the criminal justice system such as policing and corrections. Career-wise, individuals interested in security may, once they have attained the proper credentials, apply for employment in government security agencies at the federal and provincial levels, private security firms, and numerous other employers. For example, graduates may assume positions in correctional and youth detention centres, entertainment industry (such as casinos and special events), high risk and task specific escorts (like money transfers and bodyguard work), municipal by-law enforcement, national and provincial government asset protection (such as government buildings and nuclear power plants), on board security roles (airplanes, trains, and transit systems, for example), and other public and private security employment. Those skilled in investigation can also pursue employment as criminal investigators, police officers, and private investigators, among others. Graduates have found employment with auditing and accounting firms, corporate organizations, in-house private sector businesses, law firms, private investigation agencies, provincial and federal government, and as industrial, insurance, retail, and undercover investigators. Students should be aware that some positions will require further training and education, and those who possess a criminal record may find it difficult to attain employment in security, corrections, and related areas. To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must either be a graduate of the College's a Law and Security Administration or Police Foundations program or have a 'related college diploma or university degree' with a 'Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher' ad/or 'related work experience.' Applicants must also undergo an 'orientation session consisting of' an 'interview, resume, transcripts,' and questionnaire. Prospective students 'with post-secondary credits may be considered for advance standing on an individual basis.'
