Police Recruit Training - Lethbridge Community College

Lethbridge Community College's 1-year Police Recruit Training certificate is designed for individuals aspiring to a career in policing or related areas, like private investigation or private security. The Program has been 'developed in collaboration with the four police services of southern Alberta and Lethbridge Community College to address the specific education and training needs of their new recruits.' Among the major topics to be covered are Bias Free Policing in Law Enforcement, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Investigative Techniques, Law Enforcement Firearms, Laws and Statutes for Law Enforcement, Police Ethics and Discipline, Selected Statutes for Law Enforcement, Technical Report Writing, and Use of Force. The Program 'will meet or exceed provincial standards in the areas of police recruit training and will further enhance the skill sets and competencies these officers require to be effective in the policing field.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue careers, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in policing, corrections, security, and other related areas of the criminal justice system. Students should be aware, however, that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the Criminal Justice field as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history. Moreover, some careers may require further training or requirements beyond the Certificate, as determined by individual employers. Most police departments, for example, require candidates to write assessment examinations, meet certain physical and psychological pre-requisites, have valid CPR, First Aid, and driver's license, and undergo recruit training..

Career-wise, graduates may be employed in various positions across Canada, including working for educational or governmental institutions, private organizations, or for employers in the non-profit or private sector. For example, graduates may work in the areas of administration, corrections, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, government, insurance, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, private and public investigation, public and private security, the courts, victim services, and young offenders, to name but a few. Potential employers for graduates include Canada Customs and Immigration, correctional facilities, federal and provincial law enforcement agencies, juvenile detention centres, military police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and various municipal police forces.

Admission to the Program 'is normally restricted to those students who have been hired by a police service or related agency, recommended by a police service or related agency or who have been approved for admission by a police service or related agency.' Individuals lacking the aforementioned requirement may still apply to the Program but will be required to undergo 'an interview with the Program Leader' in order to 'assess the applicantĘs education and work history and suitability for enrolment into the program..'

In general, to be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must 'have an Alberta High School Diploma or equivalent;' prospective 'applicants who lack the required academic admission requirements can apply to the College and University Preparatory Program to upgrade' for the admission to the Certificate. Applicants with previous relevant work experience may qualify for advanced standing via Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). To apply for PLA assessment, applicants should contact the Program Leader/Coordinator. Although not required for admission, applicants are advised to 'ensure through a medical examination that their cardiovascular system is suitable to undertake strenuous exercise.'
