Police Foundations - Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology

Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology's 2-year Police Foundations diploma is a career-oriented program designed for individuals who aspire to a career in policing or related areas, like security. The Program will equip candidates with the knowledge and skills required for effective police work, including the ability to address, effectively, the myriad of problems faced by the communities in which they will work. Candidates will be provided with 'a broad education in human relations skills and the interpretations of social interaction,' including 'the study of police powers, race relations, ethics, communication and investigation.' Furthermore, students will gain 'an understanding of how to conduct a job search' such as 'effectively designing a cover letter and resume, completing an application form and presenting oneself positively in an interview.' Students will also be 'introduced to co-operative education, field placement and graduate employment.' To be eligible for admission into the Program, applicants will usually require to have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, with Grade 12 English (C) or (U). Individuals who are interested in the Program but who do not possess the aforementioned credential are advised to 'contact a counselor at 519-541-2402 or 519-542-7751 ext. 3412.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue careers, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in policing, corrections, security, and other related areas of the criminal justice system. Students should be aware, however, that having a criminal record could be an obstacle to finding employment in the Criminal Justice field as many employers are reluctant to hire those with a criminal history. Moreover, some careers may require further training or requirements beyond the diploma, as determined by individual employers. Most police departments, for example, requires candidates to write assessment examinations, meet certain physical and mental pre-requisites, have valid CPR, First Aid, and driver's license, and undergo recruit training.

Career-wise, graduates may be employed in various positions across Canada, including working for educational or governmental institutions, private organizations, or for employers in the non-profit or private sector. For example, graduates may work in the areas of administration, corrections, crime prevention, criminal investigation, criminal law, government, insurance, law and law enforcement, national security, offender case management, policing, private and public investigation, public and private security, the courts, victim services, and young offenders, to name but a few. Common employers of graduates include Canada Customs and Immigration, correctional facilities, federal and provincial enforcement agencies, halfway houses, military police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and various municipal and provincial police forces, among others.

Graduates of the Program may also pursue further educational opportunities, such as at the bachelor's level, in policing, related criminal justice fields, or other disciplines at various universities, colleges, and institutes across Canada and internationally, often with advanced standing. Graduates can take advantage of 1 of the College's 6 transfer agreements that exist where students can transfer into the Bachelor of Applied Science at Siena Heights University (Drive Adrian, Michigan, USA), Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science at University of Windsor, Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith University (Australia), Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice at Nipissing University, Bachelor of Justice at Ryerson Polytechnic University.
