PROGRAM WEBSITE International Programs - Justice Institute of British Columbia The Justice Institute of British Columbia, via the Police Academy, offers International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified training, both in Canada and around the world, in policing and security to candidates of foreign countries. The Academy is home to a faculty that 'includes a range of professionals who specialize in a broad spectrum of police and security fields,' including 'serving or retired officers' and may with 'post graduate degrees.' The faculty is 'specifically contracted per project and assignment,' and all instructors 'are fully qualified, recognized specialists in their field.' The Academy believes in 'the principles of dignity, respect and equality for all humans' and aims to further the police 'profession in the global marketplace' through customized training that extends 'beyond the traditional police advanced training models with courses in human rights, ethics, internet security, forensic investigation, sexual abuse and family violence investigation, smuggling and immigration investigation, drugs and organized crime.' The Academy also specializes 'in programs that deal with terrorism, safety and security, leadership, management and strategic planning, and the development of police services particularly for the re-building of civil societies.' The advantage of foreign candidates studying in Canada is that they 'can experience the full range of physical police training including self defense and control tactics' as well as take training in 'English as a Second Language (ESL) for the language of police and related professionals.' Students taking ESL will also have their respective language training linked with 'assignments or practicums with Canadian Police agencies.' Candidates can also take advantage of the Academy's 'strong, collaborative relationships with all the Academies and Divisions at the Justice Institute of BC' by training in 'team-based work in the fields of :Corrections, Community Services, Conflict Resolution, Emergency Medicine (Paramedics) and Fire Safety and Emergency Management.' Candidates can also pursue further education and training at numerous universities and colleges across BC with which the Academy has working partnerships. Moreover, in addition to training, the Academy's faculty and 'professionals are available to speak on a number of topics' such as Cyber and Internet Based Crime, Family and Spousal Abuse, Mental Health Offenders, School Security, Sexual Abuse, and Terrorism.
