PROGRAM WEBSITE Police Science (Cadet) - Holland College Holland College's Certificate in Law and Security, which is about 36 weeks in duration including a 6-week work experience placement, is primarily designed for individuals aspiring to a career, career advancement, and/or further education in the security field. The Program 'is officially endorsed by the Canadian Society for Industrial Security Inc.' Among the major areas in which students will acquire competency are application of interpersonal intervention techniques, defensive and tactical driving, effective communication, fire arms, fire prevention, first aid and CPR, legal, protection, and security issues, psychology, self-defense and control tactics, sociology, transporting of dangerous goods, wellness and fitness, workplace hazardous materials information system (WHMIS), and written communications. Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in security and related areas. Career-wise, graduates may apply for employment in 'federal and provincial security agencies,' and 'private security companies.' Graduates may also assume positions in areas like protection private policing, regulatory enforcement, and safety and security officers. In fact, graduates 'have secured employment in areas' like airport security, casino security, C.N. Police (special constables), Customs Canada, hotel security, military police, municipal/provincial compliance enforcement officers, nuclear plant response forces, private security companies, retail loss prevention, sheriff departments, university campus police, and young offenders facilities. Students should be aware that some careers in the security field may require further training; in addition, individuals possessing a criminal record may find it difficult to attain employment in this field. Students may also advance their education and/or training in security or related areas, such as conservation enforcement, corrections, court and tribunal agents, criminal justice, criminology, investigation, police, and probation, at various institutes and colleges across Canada. The Program may, in fact, 'enhance qualifications for acceptance into police training programs.' To be eligible for admission into the Law and Security program, applicants must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the Program, have completed Grade 12, or equivalent, including 'credits at or above the general level,' and possess a valid driver's license. Prospective students must also submit 'a Police Records Check with no findings of guilt (CPIC) for Bondability,' a completed 'Holland College medical form,' 3 'completed reference forms' and a 'resume including work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information' that may be relevant to the application. Applicants may be required to undergo an interview and further assessment, as determined by the College.
