PROGRAM WEBSITE Police Foundations - Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology 2-year Legal Office Administration diploma is a career-oriented program designed to ready students for employment, career advancement, or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related areas. The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in legal administration, such as 'in legal and paralegal organizations.' These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate. Furthermore, students will be given training in administrative support, including in the use of proper legal terminology and business English and human relations. Through training that extends beyond the diploma, particularly via experience, graduates may specialize 'in conveyancing, litigation, family, estate and corporate practice, with a law firm, or' assume 'administration duties in a paralegal or business setting.' Students will also have the opportunity for experiential learning through 'office experience within the community and the College.' To graduate, students must complete 18 mandatory courses, 4 general education courses, and 2 communication courses with a grade of at least 50 percent 'or a letter grade of P (Pass) or S (Satisfactory) in each course in each semester,' and must achieve an overall, year to year average of 60 percent or better. Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record. Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work. To be eligible for admission to the Program, 'applicants following the OSIS curriculum must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD - 30 credits) at the general level, or equivalent,' and 'a minimum of Grade 12 English at the general level.' 'Grade 12 Mathematics at the general level' is recommended. Those 'applicants following the OSS curriculum must have an OSSD or equivalent,' and 'must also have Grade 12 English (C) or (U) (ENG4C, ENG4U).' The College recommends that OSS applicants take 'any Grade 12 College Mathematics (MAP 4C or MCT 4C), or any Grade 12 University Mathematics.' Applicants who do not possess any of the aforementioned credentials and 'who are 19 years of age or over by the first day of classes' can apply via "mature student status." Mature applicants 'will be considered on an individual basis and acceptance will be determined by counseling, College Placement Testing (CPT), previous post-secondary education and evaluation of experience.' Furthermore, mature applicants who have 'no documentation of Grade 12 education must supply, if requested, proof of age, such as a copy of an official birth certificate or driver's license.' Although not required for admission, the College recommends that all applicants acquire the ability to type at least 30 words per minute. The Program does not teach keyboarding skills. Students who are unable to type 30 words per minute 'during the first two weeks of the first semester' are 'will be given the opportunity to enroll in an "Introduction to Keyboarding" course through Part-time Studies.'
