PROGRAM WEBSITE Ontario College Certificate in 911 and Emergency Response - Durham College Durham College's 2-year Legal Office Administration diploma is a career-oriented program designed to ready students for employment, career advancement, or further educational opportunities in legal office administration. Students will be equipped with 'a basic understanding of law, with emphasis on the rules of procedure. Through the use of 'specialized terminology and documentation' participants will develop skills in electronic transcription, keyboarding, and word processing and gain familiarity 'with the legal software most commonly used' in the profession. Moreover, the Program will assist students improve their respective communication and human relations abilities. The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate. Students will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via a work experience placement where learners' performances will be evaluated by the employers. The College will attempt to place students in a placement of their preference. To graduate, 'students must achieve a minimum keyboarding speed of 45 net words per minute.' Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions, such as legal assistant or secretary, in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record. Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work. To be eligible for admission to the Program applicants must have either an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, Basic Training for Skills Development (BTSD), or General Educational Development (GED). Applicants must also have completed senior level (Grade 11 or higher) subject credits, including General (G), Advanced (A), OAC, College Preparation (C), University/College Preparation (M), University Preparation (U) or Postsecondary (college or university), and Grade 12 English. Applicants who do not have the aforementioned credentials and who are 19 years of age or older by the commencement of the Program may apply under "mature student status." Furthermore, applicants 'with a related academic background to the Office Administration - General may be considered for advanced standing on an individual basis.' Although not required for admission, the College advises applicants to acquire the ability to type at least 50 words per minute as this skill is beneficial not only within the Program but also when pursuing employment. If a Program becomes oversubscribed, that is, the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available seats, the College will prioritize applicants thusly: 'permanent residents of Ontario, permanent residents of other provinces and territories in Canada, applicants from other countries.'
