PROGRAM WEBSITE Police Foundations - Confederation College Confederation College's 2-year Law and Security Administration program is primarily designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to work in various areas of criminal justice system administration, particularly Correctional Services, Customs and Immigration, and Law Enforcement. The Program's 'course matter is given in a practicum setting and relates to three specific areas,' including administration of justice, behavioral sciences, and general culture, and learners 'can expect to be actively involved in' such things as Aptitude Testing, Crime Scene Simulation Exercises, Defensive Tactics, Field Trips, Fitness Centre, Guest Lectures, Interaction with Swat, Canine, and Riot Teams, among others, Intramural and External Sports, Photography, and Radio Communication. Students will also have the opportunity to apply what they have learned to real-world situations via 2 work experience placements that enable participants to 'gain additional knowledge and skill in a' setting 'related to law enforcement and/or security.' Furthermore, the College can assist students with attaining training for additional certificates that can enhance the qualifications earned via the Law and Security Administration program including in Canadian Firearms Safety Course, Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Field Placement - Assessments, French, Mathematics, Ojibwa, Pleasure Craft Operator - Boating Safety, Standard First Aid, Search and Rescue, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS). Graduates of the Program may pursue various careers, career advancement, and/or further education in various aspects of the criminal justice system administration. Graduates have been successful in finding employment in such areas as Canada Border Services, Correctional Services, and Law Enforcement. Graduates can apply for such positions as Airport/Hospital Security, Alcohol and Gaming Commission, Armored Car Guard, By-law Enforcement Officer, Canada Customs Officer, Correctional Services Officer, Dispatcher for Ambulance, Fire, and Police, Environmental Officer, Immigrations Officer, Industrial or Corporate Security Officer, Loss Prevention Officer, Postal Inspection Officer, and University/College Security. Students should note that having a criminal record might be an obstacle to obtaining employment in criminal justice administration and related fields. Graduates may also pursue further education in law and security administration and related fields at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada, often with advanced standing. To be eligible for admission into the Program, applicants must either possess an 'Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels,' possess 'appropriate credits from Academic and Career Entrance,' or apply via "mature student status." To be able to apply under the latter category, the candidate must be at least 19 years of age by the commencement of the Program and must not have 'an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or its equivalent.' Mature applicants will be required to demonstrate competency to undertake studies at the College by either writing the College's 'Mature Student tests,' successfully completing 'significant postsecondary courses,' or completing recommended classes in the College's 'Academic & Career Entrance (upgrading) program.' All students must submit 'a Criminal Records Check Certificate,' which must be 'dated within the last year,' before 'the fall registration.' All costs associated with attaining this Certificate are the responsibility of the student. Having a criminal record will not disqualify a student from participating in the Program but may prevent him/her 'from completing the program and/or securing employment' as many employers, including those with whom the College has work experience placement partnerships, are reluctant to hire individuals with a criminal history. The College also advises applicants 'to check with their family doctor to ensure that participating in the rigorous physical education classes in this program would not present a health risk.'
